Novak Djokovic US Open

  • The story between Novak Djokovic and US Open started in 2003 while playing in junior, a 16-year-old Novak played at the US Open. The 2004 US Open was Novak Djokovic’s first appearance since he turned pro in 2003; Novak was eliminated by Fernando Verdasco in the third round. During the 2006 US Open Djokovic along with Andy Murray were seeded.
  • During the 2006 US Open, Novak defeated Mardy Fish in the second round but lost to Lleyton Hewitt in straight sets in the third round; in doubles that same year, Novak and Jimmy Wang were eliminated in the first round by Swedish duo Robert Lindstedt and Thomas Johansson.
  • The following year, Novak reached his first US Open final against Roger Federer, who won the title, in five sets  7–6(7–4), 7–6(7–2), 6–4.

“I think straight sets was a bit brutal for Novak, to be honest,” said Federer. “He deserved better than that. He’s had a fantastic run, not only this tournament but the entire year. I told him at the net ‘keep it up.’ We’re going to have many more battles I think.”

“It’s been an amazing two weeks, an amazing experience for me and finally I got to my first Grand Slam final. I’d like to congratulate Roger, once again he has shown that he is the best and he deserved to win today. He was the better player.”

  • During the 2008 US Open, Djokovic was once again defeated by Federer in the semifinals, 3-6, 7-5, 5-7, 2-6. History repeated itself at the 2009 US Open when Federer eliminated Novak in the semifinals.
  • Novak reached the finals at the 2010 US Open, after he defeated Roger Federer in five sets, but lost to Rafa Nadal, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2. Djokovic won his first US Open in 2011, when he faced  Nadal once again, Nole won the title in four sets, 6–2, 6–4, 6–7(3–7), 6–1.
  • During the 2012 US Open, Novak reached the finals but lost the title to Andy Murray,7–6(12–10), 7–5, 2–6, 3–6, 6–2. Novak went reaching the US Open finals in 2013, lost to Nadal (6–2, 3–6, 6–4, 6–1), reached the seminals in 2014 when he was eliminated by Kei Nishikori.
  • Novak won his second US Open in 2015, against Roger Federer (6–4, 5–7, 6–4, 6–4). Lost the title to Stan Wawrinka (6–7(1–7), 6–4, 7–5, 6–3), at the 2016 US Open. He withdrew from the 2017 US Open due to an elbow injury, that also forced him to retire from Wimbledon against Tomas Berdych and ultimately left him out for the rest of the2017 season, Novak underwent surgery on his elbow in January 2018.

“I’ve been carrying this injury for the past two years, and during this time I’ve been seeing many doctors,” said Djokovic, who before last month had not competed since losing at Wimbledon last year. I took six months off last season hoping to come back fully recovered, but unfortunately, I still felt pain,” he said.

  • 2018, was indeed a better year for Djokovic, he won his third US Open title against Juan Martin del Potro (6–3, 7–6(7–4), 6–3) and fourth Wimbledon title against Kevin Anderson 6–2, 6–2, 7–6(7–3).
  • Novak retired in the fourth round of the 2019 US Open during a match against Wawrinka, due to a left shoulder injury. On September 14, he was disqualified from the 2020 US Open, after hitting a ball at a line coach in the throat during the fourth round against Spanish player Pablo Carreno Busta.

“In accordance with the Grand Slam rulebook, following his actions of intentionally hitting a ball dangerously or recklessly within the court or hitting a ball with negligent disregard of the consequences, the tournament referee defaulted Novak Djokovic from the 2020 US Open.

“Because he was defaulted, Djokovic will lose all ranking points earned at the US Open and will be fined the prize money won at the tournament in addition to any or all fines levied with respect to the offending incident.”

  • Novak is playing against Russian player Daniil Medvedev at the finals of the 2021 US Open.
